So in an attempt to be a good chum I agreed to do a blog each Friday about fish. When she first asked me I screwed up my face thinking, hmmm little old me, what do I know about fish? But that's the idea I know nuffink about fish except how to avoid eating it and when I do get my hands on it how to make a hash of cooking it. If I can get to grips with fish anyone can.
It may also be interesting for those interested (say what) to hear about different species of fish we have available by the beach over in the old N of Z.
Last week was the start and I set myself a Fortnightly Fish Challenge go take a look see what other nonsense I can babble on about.
The extent of our fish intake this week has been poor as ever. Darling Daughter was lucky enough to have some tempura battered fish, pictured below, nom nom nom!
Nothing wrong with some fish fingers I know but would be grand to set a good example to the little Cherubs and get chowing down on fish like its the normal thing to do (because it is of course).
As for Notsosuperscottishmummy and Lovely Hubby we are having the nutritious delight of these bad boys (pictured below) tonight as part of our anniversary dinner. I am pretty sure these don't count as our fish intake but I love them!
I've got till next Friday to complete my first challenge. Grocery shop will take place this weekend and I will have to have my fishy requirements on my shopping list.
My ideas so far are;
- Go for glory and make mussels for me and Lovely Hubby. Bit scary by all accounts, no idea what I would serve with them for a start and when I mentioned it to Lovely Hubby he looked a bit scared (come to think of it he looked a bit scared about every fish suggestion, have a bit of faith man come on).
- Start with something I know, monkfish curry, courtesy of a recipe from fellow scot Nick Nairn. Lovely Hubby has made this in the past and it is tasty, monkfish is cheap(er) here and I can always ask Lovely Hubby if I get stuck.
- Last option (so far) is a Fish Pie from my old faithful Annabel Karmel cook book, Darling Daughter could eat with us and if Lovely Hubby doesn't like it he can lump it! Only wee problem here is cod is required, you can get cod here but relatively speaking it is kinda pricey, so would need to investigate a kiwi alternative.
All sounds very tasty, not like you to eat fish dishes. Granny used to make a wonderful fish pie which you refused to eat.
ReplyDeleteAhhh Granny Pig thank you for your comment! Fish pie never used to appeal to me but had one at Aunty Carols house a few years back and it was great. Must be an age thing!
DeleteI think it is an age thing. I never used to like mince or fish pie but love it now.
DeleteThere is a truck at the market on a Saturday morning selling fish. I know you have work but will investigate tomorrow and report to you tomorrow evening over a wine.
ReplyDeletedon't want to be rude and not reply but seems silly seeing as I have seen you since you made comment but thank you for making a comment. Good chum as always, thankyou xxx
DeleteAh see, you are getting into it. Your face was a pic when I asked you to get onboard, but it's fun. I'd love to see what your fish van is like! Give me a shout if you need help, you could always Skype as you cook next week we could do a cook along!
ReplyDeletethanks, will let you know what my decision is re. what is on the menu xxx
